The word Dobro is, in popular usage, the generic term for a wood-bodied, single cone resonator guitar. It is also an American brand of resonator guitar, currently owned by the Gibson Guitar Corporation. - WikipediaA Dobro is a type of guitar. Actually, it uses the body of a guitar, but it can be so different depending on the type. Their are three types of stringing for a dobro, let alone the different bodies. The first type is for picking, which creates a singular deep pluunk. The second type is for a slide-rule, which creates a pluuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuunk. And a type which can be used by both, a pluuuuuuuuunk. And then the different resonators and body types also change.
A Dobro is a much different instrument then a guitar. It can be (and is) very hard to transition from a guitar to a dobro. Guitars strings are half metal, half plastic. Dobro's are all metal and raised from the fretboard so that you can slide them, but not pick them.(Easily.)
All in all, if you need to play loudly without electricity, this is the guitar!
